Services Services provided by DHS include:

1. Financial Assistance – Money is paid to the family taking care of a child in financial need.
2. Allows eligible households a debit card called Lone Star Card that they may use in authorized grocery stores for purchase of food for human consumption. Persons generally eligible include those who cook at home, work for low wages, are employed part-time, receive a welfare check, are unemployed, or those who get small social security checks or other pensions.
3. Medical Assistance – Provides money to pay: a physician’s services, hospital services, pharmacy services, family planning services, check-ups, diagnosis treatment, eye glasses, hearing aids, and dentures.
4. Employment – Helps clients gain employment. This is the main focus of Texas Works Program.

Eligibility Financial Assistance: (a) must be pregnant or must have deprived child under 18 or if 18 must be in high school and will graduate before 19th birthday. Deprivation can be based on absence of a parent or if both parents are in home, deprivation can be base incapacity of parent or unemployment of a parent; (b) a U.S. citizen or a registered alien; (c) must be a resident of Texas.

Lone Star Card/Food Stamp Program: (a) household size; (b) available resources; (c) net income after applying uniform national income and resource.

Medical Assistance: (a) individuals who are eligible for TANF (Temporary Aid for Needy Families) or Medicaid programs; (b) individuals who receive Supplementary Security Income (SSI).
