Services 1. Social Security: Funds provide for retirement, survivors, and disability on a needs basis. Retirement monies may be drawn when an individual retires and is eligible at 62 for retirement checks. If the worker dies, survivor’s checks are received by certain family members at monthly payments and an initial lump sum upon death of the worker. Disability covers severe disabling accident or illness before age 65. Both physical and mental illnesses which prevents a worker from being employed and which is expected to last at least 12 months are included. Medicare payments consist of medical and hospital insurance. These measures aid in providing adequate health care for those 65 and older. Also eligible are those under 65 who have been disabled for two years.

2. Supplemental Security Income (S.S.I.): Provision of S.S.I. money enables people to receive funds for disability, blindness, and age related requirements. Unlike Social Security, S.S.I. is provided from funds in the National Treasury.

3. Black Lung: This program, established in 1972, offers financial assistance for coal miners and/or their widows. Benefits affect coal miners who are susceptible to black lung disease. Payments for black lung disease are on a monthly basis and begin when diagnosis and verification of the disorders is found.

Eligibility To qualify for Retired, Survivors, Disability Insurance, the worker must be insured by having worked or been self-employed in an occupation covered by Social Security.
