"Babies and Books"

Project Information

"Babies and Books" is a literacy program that acquaints parents and grandparents of newborns with the important role they play in the development of their children. A packet including baby's first library card and baby's first books is presented to mothers of newborns. By reading to their babies and becoming regular library users themselves, parents help their babies develop language skills that start them on the path to success in reading and learning.

The Nacogdoches Friends of the Library would like to provide every baby born in a Nacogdoches County hospital with a book bag containing the following:

1. Babies Love Books, a guide for grown-ups
2. A booklet of finger plays and games
3. "Read to Me", some tips on reading to children
4. Family Reading Tips from the Barbara Bush Foundation
5. Raising a Reader, Raising a Writer, a booklet from the National Association for the Education of Young Children
6. Library Card Application--to be brought to the Nacogdoches Public Library to exchange for the real thing
7. Baby's First Book--a sturdy board book
8. A "Love Some Bunny? Read Together Every Day" Bookmark
9. Pamphlet on the Nacogdoches Public Library
10. Various other information on cultural programs, children's playgrounds, Junior Forum's Pajama Story Time schedule, etc.

These are all packed into a sturdy, bright red canvas book bag!

The nurses at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital and Nacogdoches Medical Center deliver the bags to the parents as they are released from the hospital.

Book bags are available for sale at the library for babies born outside the county.

In 2000 there were 1600 babies born in the two hospitals in Nacogdoches County
!

Give Nacogdoches babies their first book!

BABIES AND BOOKS BAGS : $10.00 EACH
